Sirte

Sirte, also Surt and Sirt (Arabic: سرت, French: Syrte) is a city in Libya, in the Surt District, seat of some important governmental institutions (on the national level). It is on the south coast of the Gulf of Sidra (ancient Syrtis Maior, from which Sirt's name derives).

Former Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi was born here in 1942, and was killed here in 2011 following the uprising that deposed him.
